Youth advocate for sugary drinks initiative

YLI youth attended the Choosing Health campaign launch event in Bayview on February 1st. The campaign calls for an initiative to improve health factors such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease through a 2 cents per ounce distributor-level tax on sugary drinks in San Francisco. The revenue generated will be reinvested in communities most impacted by sugar-sweetened beverages that contribute to health disparities. Supervisors Wiener, Mar, Cohen, Chiu, and Avalos are all leading the effort, along with a coalition of residents, parents, youth, and community-based organizations. Fiorella Monteza, a TURF youth advocate, met with Supervisor Mar at the launch event to show appreciation for the initiative.
