JOB DESCRIPTION: BROTHERS, UNITE! GROUP LEADER / TEACHING ARTIST

Salary and Schedule: $20-$30/hour. After-school work is available Monday-Friday at Oakland public schools and parks — in your cover letter please specify the days/times you are available. Looking to hire as soon as possible to screen, hire and orient staff for 2013-14 school year.

Organization Description: Brothers on the Rise (BOTR) empowers boys and young men of color (BYMOC) to achieve individual success, develop healthy relationships and contribute to a more just and equitable society. Together with parents, teachers and providers, we help develop boys into responsible, peaceful, caring and productive young men. This is accomplished through gender-responsive, culturally appropriate direct services as well as systems change achieved through training and technical assistance for partner institutions to implement programs for BYMOC and/or more effectively serve this population.

BOTR is a fiscally sponsored project of the nonprofit organization, San Francisco Study Center. Our administrative office is in Fruitvale at the Spanish Speaking Citizen’s Foundation and our youth programs take place at Oakland public schools and parks sites. Technical assistance partners include schools, nonprofits and public sector agencies.

Program and Position Summary: The Brothers, UNITE! Group Leader will serve as a facilitator for the school year Brothers, UNITE! initiative. The program builds literacy, life skills and leadership, while also creating brotherhood and developing a clear understanding of and commitment to responsible manhood. The Group Leader facilitates all activities, is responsible for the youth’s safety and behavior, directly leads a group of approximately fifteen 4-8th grade male participants, and collectively with other staff supports a group of up to 30 such program participants. There will also be up to 4 Lift a Brother Up youth interns per site, who will apprentice under the Brothers, UNITE! Group Leader, helping to lead Brothers, UNITE! activities and mentoring these youth. Group Leaders are responsible for supervising these youth interns and mentoring them in our profession of human services, youth development, and particularly work with BYMOC.

There are three program components to Brothers, UNITE!: culturally based manhood training; media/arts; sportsmanship and fitness. The Group Leader also performs related tasks, such as program development and evaluation, and is also expected to chip in as necessary with other programmatic and administrative tasks. The Group Leader is supervised by the Program Coordinator and Manager, who are in turn supervised by the Executive Director.

Sites and Schedule:
Arroyo Viejo Rec Center, East Oakland: Monday, 2:45-5:45 PM; Wednesday, 1:15-4:15 PM
Carmen Flores Rec Center, Fruitvale: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:45-5:15 PM
Greenleaf School, East Oakland: day/time TBD
Additional site(s) and schedule(s): TBD
Additional paid time for staff and program orientations, staff meetings and special events, times TBD and communicated during hiring process

Minimum Qualifications Required:
* You must have at least 48 semester units from an accredited college or be willing to take and pass an Alameda County equivalency exam.
* At least 1 year of experience working in direct practice with youth.
* Must commit to the full school year — between mid-late August and mid-June 2013.
* Must pass a criminal background check, and produce a negative T.B. test result from the last two years.
* Possess solid interpersonal, verbal, written communication and conflict resolution skills.
* Ability to work independently (with supervision), and work with diverse populations.

Other Desired Qualifications:
* Experience teaching media/art form and/or team building/sports/fitness instruction.
* Prior experience in boys’ / young men’s work or related experience.
* Experience working in a school and/or community based setting.
* Bilingual ability, a plus, particularly Spanish.

Responsibilities:
* Punctuality and daily attendance
* Facilitation of all daily youth activities
* Effectively and appropriately manage student behavior
* Communicate with parents around student progress
* Curriculum development and the implementation of evaluation procedures
* Help coordinate and lead field trips, and special events.
* Prepare participants for presentations of service learning and social action projects.
* Other duties as assigned by your supervisors
